National Reference Center for surveillance of
transmissible spongiform encephalopathies
Since June 1, 1993, the CJD surveillance unit investigates suspected cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease voluntarily reported from all over Germany to the Surveillance Center in Göttingen. Physicians working in the study perform neurological examinations of patients with suspected CJD in hospitals reporting the cases. Results of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis (14-3-3
Proteine), an important diagnostic test performed by the study team are included in the clsassification process and regular follow-ups are carried out to establish a final diagnosis.
Since January 1, 2006 this work is carried out by National Reference Center (NRC) for surveillance of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.
